The Return of Reading for Pleasure— a Privilege We Must Actively Protect

We live in a time when companies spend billions to capture your time and attention. In this frenetic world of short attention spans and instant gratification, reading becomes an act of quiet rebellion. It is protection from agendas set by algorithms and influencers, and instead sets you on a whole different course. It says, ‘I am autonomous, I am resilient, I have patience, and I am imaginative.’

With that in mind, Halliford is working very hard to prioritise reading for pleasure – and for academic purposes – but primarily for escapism and enjoyment.

Firstly, we recognise that fostering a love of reading begins with the simple yet sometimes daunting act of choosing a book. Even the most extensive library holds limited value without knowledgeable librarians and teachers who can guide students thoughtfully. When faced with an overwhelming range of options, many students feel uncertain and often gravitate towards familiar titles, where film adaptations provide reassurance and a sense of familiarity.

This is why careful library design has been so important at Halliford. Books must be both visible and inviting with covers facing outward, rather than hidden on overcrowded shelves. When students can pick up, handle, and explore books freely, curiosity is naturally ignited. Even more powerful are handwritten recommendation cards from fellow students; knowing that a peer has enjoyed a book makes it far more appealing. Author visits further broaden horizons, introducing students to new ideas and genres, while personal recommendations from staff help to build meaningful connections with reading.

At Halliford School, we understand that time for reading must be actively protected. Many students balance busy lives that include homework, extra-curricular activities, family responsibilities, and digital distractions. Unlike many modern forms of entertainment, reading does not offer instant gratification; it demands patience, focus, and perseverance. For this reason, we create dedicated opportunities during the school day when reading is prioritised and free from distractions, ensuring every student has the chance to engage fully.

Finally, we believe that effort and commitment must be recognised and celebrated. Initiatives such as our ‘Chocolate Challenge’ encourage students to tackle more demanding texts with complex themes and challenging vocabulary. Students who demonstrate genuine engagement are rewarded with a chocolate bar and recognised in assembly. We also celebrate word millionaires, regular borrowers, and enthusiastic reviewers. These initiatives send a clear message: at Halliford School, reading is valued, celebrated, and deserving of time, effort, and pride.
