We are delighted that Old Hallifordian and former Head Prefect, Will Wheeler, has returned to Halliford School to train as a teacher. Here, he tells us why he made that decision and what makes Halliford such a special environment in which to be a student and to teach.
As a former student, what aspects of Halliford School made you decide to return as a trainee teacher?
When reflecting on my decision to return to Halliford as a trainee teacher, the strong sense of community undoubtedly played a significant role. As a former student, I was fortunate enough to experience firsthand the supportive, inclusive environment that Halliford cultivates. The close-knit community fosters meaningful connections between students, teachers and the support staff, creating an atmosphere that truly feels like a home away from home.
The genuine care and dedication exhibited by the teachers during my time as a student made a lasting impression on me. Not only did they consistently go above and beyond in supporting students academically, but they also prioritised individual well-being and personal growth. This level of commitment and passion for education inspired me to pursue a career in teaching and ultimately led me back to Halliford.
Returning as a trainee teacher felt like a natural choice, given the positive experiences and relationships I had built within this community. I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the school that has given me so much, and I am excited to continue contributing to Halliford’s vibrant community as I grow in my teaching career.
How do you think our school’s unique approach to education sets it apart from other institutions?
Halliford’s commitment to maintaining small class sizes fosters a more personalised approach to education, setting it apart from other schools. This unique approach offers several benefits that contribute to an exceptional learning experience.
Smaller classes allow teachers to develop a deeper understanding of each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. With this knowledge, they can tailor their instruction to address individual needs and ensure that every student receives the support they need to succeed.
Our learning environment encourages active participation and collaboration among students. This fosters a sense of belonging and promotes a supportive learning community where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and engaging in meaningful discussions. With fewer students in each class, there are fewer distractions and disruptions, leading to a more focused and productive learning environment.
By prioritising small class sizes, Halliford demonstrates a dedication to providing a personalised, student-centred education that nurtures individual growth and development. This distinctive approach sets the school apart and contributes to the success of its students.
What do you believe are the most significant contributions Halliford has made to your personal and academic growth?
The impact that Halliford has had on my personal and academic growth cannot be overstated. The supportive, inclusive environment at Halliford encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and develop self-assuredness. Teachers consistently fostered an atmosphere where everyone’s opinions and ideas were valued, allowing me to gain confidence in my abilities and communication skills. Beyond the academic curriculum, my teachers prioritised character development and instilled essential life lessons that have served me well beyond the classroom. Our values of being warm-hearted team players displaying resilience, creativity, intellectual curiosity, and respect have shaped me into a well-rounded individual.
What is your fondest memory of being a student at Halliford? What are you enjoying most about being a member of staff?
My fondest memories as a student revolved around playing rugby and the camaraderie that came with being part of a team. Those experiences not only allowed me to develop my athletic abilities but also taught me valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.
Now, as a member of staff, I am thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to coach Hallifordians and help them create their own lasting memories. Watching them grow as individuals and teammates is incredibly rewarding, and I feel privileged to play a role in shaping their experiences at Halliford. Additionally, I appreciate the supportive and collaborative environment among the staff, which makes coming to work each day a pleasure.
One aspect of being a member of staff that I particularly enjoy is the ability to give back to the school that has given so much to me. Being able to contribute to the Halliford community in a meaningful way is a constant source of pride and fulfilment. Ultimately, my time at Halliford, both as a student and as a staff member, has been an incredibly enriching experience that has shaped me into the person I am today.
What are your long-term goals as a teacher, and how do you hope to make a lasting impact on your students?
As I embark on my teaching journey, my long-term goals are centred around becoming a fully qualified teacher and making a lasting impact on my students. Beyond achieving this professional milestone, I aspire to climb the ranks within the school, taking on more significant responsibilities that will enable me to shape the educational experience for future generations of Halliford students.
Ultimately, my hope is to become the kind of teacher that students remember fondly even years after they have left the school. I want to be a teacher who not only imparts knowledge but also inspires students to think critically, dream big, and pursue their passions. To achieve this, I will strive to create engaging, thought-provoking lessons that challenge students to grow both academically and personally.
By fostering a safe, inclusive classroom environment, I aim to encourage open dialogue and collaboration, allowing students to feel comfortable expressing their ideas and opinions. Moreover, I will work to develop meaningful connections with each student, recognising their individual strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. This will enable me to provide targeted support and guidance that helps them reach their full potential.
