Halliford School

 Admissions Criteria

Admissions Criteria

Halliford School is a boys school (11+ to 18+) with a co-educational sixth form. It aims to prepare its pupils for GCSE, AS, A level and entry to university. Applications are welcome from both boys and girls (for the Sixth Form only). Entry for most boys is normally at 11+ with a smaller entry at 13+. Entry for girls is only at 16+.  Boys are also accepted directly into the Sixth Form.

The family nature of the School is reflected in the admissions process in that brothers and sisters are always accepted into the School as long as they can meet the academic standards required for entry and benefit from the academic education provided.

Applicants with special needs or disabilities are admitted to the school according to the same criteria as other pupils, provided their admission is compatible with the provision of efficient education for the children with whom they will be educated and with an efficient use of resources.

The following criteria are taken into consideration before offering a place:

• The results of an interview with the Headmaster or Deputy Head.
• A suitable reference from the candidate's current school.
• A satisfactory pass in the entry examination or satisfactory results at GCSE.

Parental commitment to the School and its ethos is as important a factor as academic performance. However, the School does not usually accept pupils for whom success at GCSE and progression to AS and A level would be an unrealistic expectation.

At both 11+ and 13+ an average mark of over 50% is expected in the entrance examination for any applicant to be considered for the offer of a place. The average mark achieved in the 11+ entry examination for the last two years by applicants accepting places has been 70%.

Integration of New Pupils

The successful candidates for entry at 11+ and 13+ are invited to attend a taster day towards the end of the summer term before entry in September. The 11+ entry are also invited to a sports morning the Saturday before the start of term in September. All pupils new to the School are asked to attend the Tuesday afternoon before term actually begins in order to meet their tutors. All new pupils are given mentoring support to help them settle in at Halliford.
