Admissions

Halliford School is a boy's school (11-18) with entry for girls in the Sixth Form (16-18). It aims to prepare its pupils for GCSE, AS and A Level and entry to University. Entry for most boys is normally at 11+ and Sixth Form with a smaller entry at 13+.

The family nature of the School is reflected in the admissions process in that brothers and sisters are always accepted into the School as long as they can meet the academic standards required for entry and benefit from the academic education provided. Applicants with special needs or disabilities are admitted to the School according to the same criteria as other pupils, provided their admission is compatable with the provision of efficient education for the children with whom they will be educated and with an efficient use of resources.

    Admissions Criteria

The following criteria are taken into consideration before offering a place

    • The results of an interview with the Headmaster or Deputy Head
    • A suitable reference from the candidate's current school
    • A satisfactory pass in the entry examination

Parental commitment to the School and its ethos is as important a factor as academic performance. However, the School does not usually accept pupils for whom success at GCSE and progression to AS and A level would be an unrealistic expectation.

    11+ Entry

The closing date for registrations for entry in September 2019 is Monday 10 December 2018.

The entrance examination for entry in September 2019 will be held on Saturday 19 January 2019.

The exam will consist of papers in English and Mathematics and tests in verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The verbal and non-verbal reasoning papers are standard. The English paper is in two parts - comprehension and composition. The Mathematics paper is based on National Curriculum Level 4.

    13+ Entry

The closing date for registrations for the 13+ Pre-Test (entry September 2021) is Monday 10 December 2018.

The 13+ Pre-Test examination will be held on Saturday 19 January 2019.

Candidates will sit a pre-test two years prior to entry and will consist of papers in English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The Headmaster interviews each candidate with his parents beforehand. Successful candidates will be offered a place for entry in September 2021.

    Integration of New Pupils

The successful candidates for entry at 11+ and 13+ are invited to attend a taster day towards the end of the Summer term prior to starting in September.  Before the Autumn term begins, they are also invited to a New Pupils' Afternoon to meet with their tutors.  In addition, the 11+ pupils are invited to a sports morning on the Saturday before the start of term.  All new pupils are given mentoring support to help them settle in at Halliford.

    Entry at Other Points

Occasionally pupils enter Halliford at other points in the School. This only occurs when a vacancy has arisen as a result of a pupil leaving the School. The entry process will be the same, in principle, as that for entry at 11+ and 13+ i.e. it will be based on an interview, a school report and an entrance examination. The precise details of the entrance examination will depend on the year of entry and will be arranged on a case-by-case basis.
